CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Heâd maybe slept. Mostly dozed. Finn couldnât get himself relaxed enough.
Didnât help that the Arab expected him to sleep on the wooden floor, barely muffled by a throw rug and a few blankets that theyâd found in one of the trunks.
Finn had ended up leaning back against a trunk with a blanket behind him. It let him get comfortable enough. They had been left some kerosene lamps, which they had turned down to dimness.
Hans snored like usual, but he slept on the floor of Cerberus most nights anyway. This would be nothing new for him.
Zareen Shirazi didnât snore so much as purr loudly in her sleep. Finn grinned at the image of her as a big kitten. Maybe a mountain lion kitten. He had no doubt that the young woman was more dangerous than she appeared.
That Mauser wasnât for the meek or faint of heart.
Ghada had taken up a position seated cross-legged in a lotus across from him. She looked like one of those weird Buddha statues heâd come across occasionally, serenely studying the world.
If them Arab boys were set to cause trouble, no doubt Ghada would be more than they could handle. And Finn already knew he was going to hell, according to all the good folks back home, so maybe heâd have to bring a few desert tribesmen with him.
He checked his watch. Wound it, just because. It kept pretty good time, most days, so he presumed that the sun was just coming up outside.
Morning prayers facing northeast from here, and then there was like to be a mite of trouble brewing.
Finn rose and stretched. Might as well be limber when they came, in case he needed to go down fighting.
Ghada did, too, except that she started doing some strange dance in slow motion while he watched, utterly fascinated. She had a second robe over the first, but heâd seen damned near everything last night, anyway.
Now, she was stepping just so and waving her hands in something that looked a little Chinese and a little Pacific Islander Hula.
Right until he realized that at high speed, heâd just watched her punch one man, pivot to block a second, strike a third, and kick a fourth.
Oh, shit.
It looked so much more friendly and pretty dialed all the way down to this speed.
Who the hell were these women?
Zareen was some sort of Persian princess, maybe? She sure as hell wasnât a peasant woman, to have been sent to England regularly to visit her fatherâs side of the family. Or to have a killer as a maid when she did.
At least Ghada smiled at him as she worked.
Finn didnât like being in over his head, but it wasnât like it was anything alien at this point in his life, either.
A key entered the lock on the door rather noisily. Finn stepped over and tapped Hans with his foot to wake the man, while Ghada did the same with Zareen.
The door opened a moment later and Finn turned to find out his fate.
